Energy management · EnMS
ISO 50001:2018
Requirements for an energy management system that improves energy performance — efficiency, use and consumption — using an energy review, energy performance indicators and baselines.
1 What it covers
ISO 50001 asks an organisation to understand where and how it uses energy, focus on its significant energy uses, set objectives and targets, and demonstrate continual improvement in energy performance — not just in the management system. Measurement is central: energy performance indicators (EnPIs) are compared with an energy baseline (EnB).
2 Who uses it
Energy-intensive manufacturers, estates and facilities teams, data centres, hospitals and public bodies.
3 Structure and key clauses
Clauses 4–10 follow the high-level structure; the energy-specific planning sits in clause 6:
6 Planning
- 6.3 Energy review — analysing energy use and consumption, identifying significant energy uses (SEUs) and opportunities for improvement
- 6.4 Energy performance indicators (EnPIs)
- 6.5 Energy baseline (EnB)
- 6.6 Planning for collection of energy data
8 Operation
- 8.2 Design · 8.3 Procurement (energy performance considered when buying)
4 Key facts for courses and exams
- Current edition: ISO 50001:2018 + Amendment 1:2024.
- Improvement in energy performance must be demonstrated, typically by comparing EnPI values against the energy baseline (normalised where relevant variables such as weather or production change).
- Significant energy uses (SEUs) are identified through the energy review.
