Foundation: getting started with a standard in 2 weeks

How to get the most from a foundation or requirements course when a standard is completely new to you.

A foundation course is where most people meet a standard properly for the first time. A little reading beforehand turns a confusing day into a useful one.

1 Before the course (week 1)

Read the standard’s page on this site (for example ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 27001) — what it covers and who uses it
Learn the ten-clause Harmonized Structure
Look up ten terms in the glossary: interested party, documented information, nonconformity, corrective action, continual improvement, risk, objective, process, top management, audit
Ask your organisation for its policy and scope statement for the management system

2 During the course

Write down every term you do not know and check it the same evening
Note where your organisation already does what a clause requires — and where it does not
If there is a test at the end, ask what format it takes (multiple choice, short answers, open or closed book)

3 After the course (week 2)

Re-read clauses 4 to 10 with your notes
Take the Harmonized Structure quiz and your standard’s quiz
Decide your next step: internal auditor, lead auditor or implementer

Many lead auditor courses expect foundation-level knowledge on day one. If you plan to go on to one, book them a few weeks apart so the foundation content has time to settle.
