Qualification type
Implementer / lead implementer
How to design, build and run a management system that meets a standard — from gap analysis and scoping to documentation, risk assessment, internal audit and certification readiness. Shorter “implementation” courses take 1–2 days; lead implementer courses 3–5 days with an exam.
1 Who it is for
- People responsible for implementing or maintaining a management system
- Consultants who help organisations achieve certification
- Project managers leading a certification project
2 What it involves
Implementation courses are about doing, not auditing: interpreting each requirement for your organisation, planning the project, defining scope and context, setting policy and objectives, carrying out risk assessments, writing the documented information the standard needs, training people, running internal audits and management review, and preparing for the certification audit.
Lead implementer is the name PECB uses for its five-day implementation course and credential, and several UK providers now use it too. For ISO 31000, which is guidance rather than a certifiable standard, the equivalent courses are called Risk Manager or Lead Risk Manager; on this site they are listed at this level.
CQI and IRCA’s auditing course table does not include an implementer course, so most implementer certificates in the UK are issued by PECB, IBITGQ or the provider itself.
3 Typical length and assessment, by scheme
| Scheme | Typical length | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| PECB | Lead Implementer: 5 days, exam on day 5. ISO 31000 Risk Manager: three days’ training, exam on day 4 | PECB exam; credentials from Provisional Implementer to Senior Lead Implementer depending on experience |
| IBITGQ (GRC Solutions, ISO 27001) | 3 days | CIS LI online exam, 90 minutes |
| Provider-certified (e.g. BSI) | Implementation 2 days; lead implementer 4–5 days | Lead implementer courses include an exam (BSI: its 5-day ISO 9001:2026 Lead Implementer adds two days of content with an examination to its requirements and implementation courses) |
